Russian space program in 2024

At the end of January 2024, Deputy Defense Minister Aleksei Krivoruchko promised 18 orbital launches of military spacecraft before the end of the year. Seven launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles were also planned for 2024. In total, more than 40 orbital launches were scheduled by Roskosmos, according to an interview of its head Yuri Borisov published on February 19. However, Borisov cautioned that it was only a plan which would be difficult to fulfill given the experience in the previous year. In July 2024, Borisov also said that the Russian orbital grouping had increased to 244 spacecraft from 192 satellites in 2022, but most of the additions were likely cubesat-type payloads.

Planned Russian space launches in 2024:

November 21, 15:22:24 Moscow Time: A Soyuz-2-1a rocket to launch Progress MS-29 (ISS mission 90P) from Baikonur toward the International Space Station, ISS. The docking with the station is scheduled for Nov. 23, 2024, at 17:40:12 Moscow Time. (As of 2014, the launch was projected for October 16.) The delivery of the spacecraft to Baikonur was reported on June 17, 2024.

The launch vehicle for the mission was reported arriving at the Tyuratam railroad junction near Baikonur spaceport on June 25, 2024, aboard a 28-car train, also carrying components of the rocket for the Soyuz MS-26 mission.

In one of the first major milestones of the launch campaign, Progress MS-29 was placed into a vacuum chamber at Site 254 in Baikonur On Oct. 11, 2024, for a series of air leak checks, which were completed by October 16. The routine testing of the ship's solar panels was completed on Nov. 1, 2024. By Nov. 11, 2024, the spacecraft went through balancing and weighting and was transported to a fueling facility for loading of pressurized gases and propellant components. The fueling operations were completed by Nov. 12, 2024.

The cargo ship was then returned to its processing building, where it was connected to its launch vehicle adapter on Nov. 14, 2024, and rolled inside its protective fairing on Nov. 15, 2024. The completed payload section was transferred to the vehicle assembly building at Site 31 on November 16, where it was integrated with the Soyuz-2-1a rocket on Nov. 17, 2024. The State Commission then cleared the vehicle for the rollout to the launch pad which took place on the morning of November 18.

November 27, 22:00 – 24:00 Moscow Time: A Soyuz-2-1b rocket to launch a military payload, likely the ninth satellite in the Lotos-S1 series of the Liana radio-electronic intelligence network, from Site 43 in Plesetsk.

November 30: A Soyuz-2.1a/Fregat rocket to launch the Kondor-FKA No. 2 satellite from Site 1S in Vostochny. As of March 2023, the launch was expected on June 8, 2024, but by June 2024, it slipped to November 30. The satellite was delivered to Vostochny on Sept. 14, 2024. According to Roskosmos, the satellite was shipped by air and then by road to the launch site, where it was unloaded at the thermal chamber of the storage facility (INSIDER CONTENT), a part of the processing complex in Vostochny. In the next step, the spacecraft was to be transferred to the spacecraft processing facility, MIK KA, for pre-launch operations.

The fueling of the Fregat upper stage for the mission was completed on Oct. 25, 2024, and on October 28, the irreversible operations with Kondor-FKA-2 commenced with the transfer of the satellite to the fueling facility. The loading of propellant aboard the satellite was completed by Nov. 12, 2024, and specialists began preparing the spacecraft for integration with the Fregat upper stage.

2024: A Soyuz-2-1b rocket to launch the Resurs-P No. 5 satellite from Baikonur.
